Puno

At the edge of Lake Titicaca and 3.860 m, is Puno, a city that captivates and enchants by the strange magnetism that seem to spring from its mountains, its lake-like sea and their own people, descendants of the Aymara, powerful people that dominated the stage.
Before the expansion of the Inca Empire, the area now know as Puno, located in the extreme south of Peru, was male-dominated culture of Tiahuanaco, the maximum expression of Aymara development, as evidenced by the archaeological remains found in the area.

Puno was the cradle of the Inca civilization. Legend has it that the waters of Titicaca, the highest navigable lake in the world to 3.815 m and the second largest in South America with 8.400 square kilometers-emerged Manco Capac, the first Inca, to found an empire as he had ordered the Sun God

On November 4, 1688, Viceroy Conde de Lemos founded the city of Puno, named San Carlos de Austria. Since then, the place was changing its outlook, because the Spanish priests in an effort to proselytize the natives, built the beautiful churches still stand.

This region of Peru is famous for the variety and colorful folklore, undoubtedly the richest and most dazzling part of the continent, whose highest expression is the feast of the Virgen de la Candelaria, held in February.

Currently, Puno, capital of the department of the same name, is an important agricultural and ranching area, mainly from South American camelids (llamas and alpacas) which graze on its vast plateaus and plains.
